"TEA?" Louisa handed Maggie a china cup with the familiar scent of jasmine wafting from it. Ella preferred coffee and said so.

"Just a minute, Ella," her sister said. "I want our guest to be comfortable. Can I get you sugar or honey, dear?"

"No, thank you, Miss Louisa, but I—"

"So, what did you think of our new vet?" Ella asked, impatient and ready to get on with the important part of the conversation.

Now that Maggie was through cleaning out the attic, they wouldn't have many chances to finish What they'd started, unless they got lucky.

"He seemed like a nice young man, but I told you I just am not—"

"Not interested," Ella finished for her. "I know that's what you said yesterday, but I thought if you had some time to sleep on it, you might change your mind. Don't you have a horse or some other kinds of animals on that ranch of yours?"

"One horse," Maggie said. "One very healthy horse."

Ella poured her own coffee and joined her sister and their guest at the dining room table. "A man who can cure animals certainly comes in handy around here. And I'm sure he knows something about human anatomy, too."

"Ella," Lou warned. "You mustn't nag."

"I never nag," Ella insisted. "I simply state the obvious until everyone agrees with me."

Louisa sighed. "I know."

"Miss Ella." Maggie set her teacup on the white linen place mat and looked as if she was going to say something unpleasant.

"Oh, dear," Ella said. "You are upset with us. Was it the truck?"

"We shouldn't have done that," Lou agreed. "It was a little bit too forward of us, I'm sure, but our hearts were in the right place. And Cameron was so eager to help, because the young man is new in town and doesn't really know anyone at all. And he was happy to let you try the truck and give you a good deal on the price."

"I know, but—"

"And we heard Mr. Gladding was a very handsome young man," Ella continued. "Grace Whitlow had her brakes fixed and raved about him."

"More your age, too," her sister added. "Though there is nothing wrong with a younger man. Or an older one, come to think of it."

"Let's not talk about old men," Ella said, noting that Louisa's gaze had drifted to the window where Cameron's car sat in his driveway. "What did you think of the truck?"

"I'm not sure,' Maggie said, which Ella considered a very disappointing answer. "I'm going over to the auto body shop now and talk to Mr. Gladding. This morning I had no idea what was going on." She smiled. "Gabe said he thought the two of you might have something to do with it. So he was right?"

"Gabe O'Connor was there?" Now this was a turn of events she didn't care for.

"Yes. He brought—well, never mind that. Miss Ella, you have to understand that I am not looking for a husband right now. Maybe not ever."

"Such a shame," Lou said, clucking. "A waste, that's what it is.
